The LAYMRG Command - Merging and Deleting Layers in AutoCAD®
I was recently asked if there was a quick way to put all the objects on a certain layer onto another layer, which reminded me of this little beauty that you need to know about.
LAYMRG is a command for manipulating layers in AutoCAD®, and gives you the facility to merge two or more layers together so that the objects end up on the final target layer that you choose. The old layers that now contain no objects are removed, effectively merging the layers. Precisely what you'd expect from a command named LAYMRG...
Whilst this feature alone is very useful, this command can also be really helpful for getting rid of unwanted layers in your drawing. This has happened to all of us - you're working away and there's a layer in the drawing that refuses to allow you to delete it! Probably this is because it's used within a block, or perhaps a block within a block, and it can be a real nightmare trying to identify where the offending object is that is using it.
A workaround to the problem is to just merge it with say layer 0, so that you get rid of the offending layer, and whatever was using it now is on Layer 0.
So that's my piece for today - LAYMRG, a really useful tool you should remember!

I have a problem where in some drawings, I cannot use the laymrg or laydel command. It goes through the steps as though it worked and then the screen refreshes but nothing happened. Did you ever run into that problem? I've been experiencing it in v2008-2011... I've seen on some blogs references to appload to fix this, but I cannot figure out how to resolve the issue with that.... Any suggestions? By the way, this suggestion is great when it works and it works well with my clean fresh drawings.... I'm running into problems with the drawings that have been recycled from clients. Inserting into a new template did not help.

Hi Will,
I am having a problem with LAYMRG. I was able to select layers by the list of names, but all of sudden it does not show the list of all the layers. Other options are working like selecting objects on layers, but after I click N (name), the list of all layers does not show up. I've tried open a new file and making two new layers, but LAYMRG still cannot select layers by name. I am an engineer and sometimes I need to merge more than 20 layers into one layer. It is not feasible for me to select one object on each layer. So it bothers me a lot. I'm using AutoCAD® 2014 MEP. Do you happen to know what is wrong with my AutoCAD®? Thanks a lot!
